SUMMER 2008 - No local band could have asked for a better summer: plenty of gigs, great weather, good friends, good times. In the wake of tragedy, which took the life of co-founder and lead guitarist Tom "Duke" Aton in August of 2007, the band struggled, but managed to survive into its second full year, eventually blooming again with a new line-up. Uncle Joe joined the band on bass and Casey Jones picked up the lead guitar chores. Gone forever were the trademark three-part harmonies, but Big Boss Wally stepped up with his leather-throated vocals and Ginz continued to deliver the rock-solid groove that helps give CandleFish their infectiously danceable sound. The band delivered extended sets and spontaneous jams all summer long .. from Satunas' Farm to Hidden Creek Winery .. from the Stonebridge Resort nestled in the Delaware Highlands to the Dock at Cooper's Seafood House in the heart of the Lackawanna Valley, the re-configured band gelled into a rock 'n roll family that attracted audiences of all ages. A number of notable local musicians sat in, including Southside Fran from 'Take Five,' The Old Drummin Bastard from 'Mace in Dickson,' Phil Rossi from the 'Rossi-McGurl Project,' Mike Wintermute from 'Contro-band,' and Nate Napolitano from 'BFD.' CandleFish certainly had a good time, and judging from the cha-ching of the registers and the scarcity of space on the dancefloors, the folks did too .. ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - This year the golfers enjoyed a spectacular late-summer day at the Wilkes Barre Golf Club .. Though Hurricanes Hanna and Ike dumped buckets of water on Northeastern Pennsylvania in the days preceding the outing, the course was in terrific shape and served our contingent of duffers quite well .. Prize-winners included Rich Gammaitoni and his cousin Jim, both of Dunmore, as well as Kevin Zwick and Jim Dougher. Make sure to visit the golf page for a sampling of good times with friends and family in the rolling hills of northeast Pennsylvania, and put next year's tournament in your plans for the summer of 2009! |
